Whisky of the week #54 Kininvie 23 year old

Whisky of the week #54

Kininvie 23 Year Old 1990
35cl, 42.6%

If you’ve been wondering about the whisky from the Kininvie Distillery, (which you might have seen if you’ve visited the Balvinie Distillery, or even read about in Jake’s blog) here’s your chance to get a taste of their single malt! This is the first official release under the Kininvie name for the UK, a 23 year old whisky matured in a combination of bourbon and Sherry casks, presented in 35cl bottles.

Tasting Notes:

Nose: Sweet, sugary fruits and deep syrupy goodness. Spicy, ripe peaches being torn open, vanilla, a little kiwi, hints of that Sherry.
Palate: More peach, with cream at first like a Campino sweet, before becoming more removed from the central sweetness with gentle oak building. All fairly light, but full of flavour.
Finish: A little bigger and longer than expected with more sweet syrup notes.
Overall: Wow! That combination of 80% bourbon and 20% Sherry along with the 23 year maturation is the mutts nuts – no wonder they chose to finally release a Kininvie!
